In the posts below this you will find my allegory and author commentary but for now a few words on how to produce your own commentaries. Remember they should be around 300 words in length and while they do not need the formal essay structure of introduction, body and conclusion, the reader should have a sense of beginning, middle and end.
Your commentary should give some indication of your inspiration and choice of theme, idea or topic for your allegory. You might also want to comment on your choice of allegorical setting - mythic, fairytale etc.
You then need two or three paragraphs that look at specific aspects of language choice - you may wish to comment on your use of symbols or motifs or on the figurative language you have used - images, metaphors, similies or specific word choices used to contruct pictures in the readers mind.
You might also comment on apsects such as dialogue and how you have used this to convey aspects of character or on your language choices more generally - have you deliberately used old fashioned words or very modern ones to give a particular feeling or atmosphere to your story.
Sentence length is another aspect of language you could comment on. You may have used very long sentences to create a feeling of mythic grandeur or used shorter, simpler sentences to create a more modern or down to earth feeling. You may also have adjusted sentence length depending on how fast or slow paced the action was at different times in the story.
You could also comment on particular references you have slipped into your story - these could refer readers to their prior knowledge of other fairytales; of characters or places from myth and legend; or ideas from art, literature or biblical sources.
For each of the language choices you describe, you need to give some explanation for why you made that choice - why was mythic references appropriate?; what were you trying to achieve with very short sentences and so on.
Hope this helps...if all else fails ask me to go over this again in class with some more examples!

Alicija - don't panic. We'll worry about it in class Friday and you can have a few days into the holidays to get it altogether. Maybe have a few ideas ready that we can play with.
