Video games and violence research and issues assignment

Video games and violence

Here are two websites that argue against some of the “myths” about video games.

1.
http://www.pbs.org/kcts/videogamerevolution/impact/myths.html

Look at the links at the bottom of this webpage – they take you to the more verifiable sources for this information.

2.
http://www.physorg.com/news5758.html

This webpage looks specifically at the issue of links between violence and video games.

a. Using the second webpage summarise THREE arguments for why there is no link between video games and aggression.

b. List TWO positive effects of playing games.

c. Is the material in this article verifiable – try and find the original source of the information and record its url.

Research/Issues assignment

Choose ONE of the following topics

Video games are causing the moral degeneration of our society

Video games are a key factor in youth crime and violence

Stricter censorship laws are required in the new media industries

Video games have no artistic or educational merit

OR you may design your own topic (check with me first…)

You will first need to take a position on your topic and write an appropriate contention.
You will then need to research your topic – you will need at least THREE separate sources and they will all need to be verifiable.
Compile a set of research notes – you will need to have information supporting and opposing your contention as well as any important background information you will need to be fully informed.

Task One

Write a 350 – 500 word informative essay that examines all sides of the debate on your topic.

(We will look at the appropriate format for an informative essay in class time).

Task Two

Write a 350 –500 word piece arguing for your contention. This can take the form of

a letter to the editor of an appropriate publication
an opinion piece in an appropriate publication
an editorial for an appropriate publication
(We will look at the appropriate format for each of these forms in class time)

Do we have to finish all of this? If so by when? coz at the moment i've just done the first few questions.

i don't understand/know where to get the answer to question c...

To verify the information you need to see if the original source - the paper that this researcher wrote - exists. Try googling his name and you should find both him and a number of research papers he has written on the subject - that would verify it.

You only need to have finished the questions 2a, b and c. Have a look at the research topics but we will do more work on this in class and the finished assignment won't be due till the start of Term 2.

For my essay topic, would I be able to use a topic something along the lines of:
Video games are breeding an anti-social generation.

Aon,That sounds like a good topic to me...you'll have to define anti-social as part of your contention and you may need to clarify generation - people born post-1990?

can i do something along the lines of " Video games are imposing improper/immoral role models on the post 1990's generation?" ?

Your role models question sounds good - you will need to define what a role model is and clarify what is going to be meant by improper or immoral. Also be careful with the word impose - an imposition negates choice...
And by post-1990's are you going to mean people born post-1990 or who are "growing up" post-1990?

Umm..
with the research notes..are we allowed to quote from sites (in other words copy and paste)?
becuase i don't get how to do the research notes or like how they're supposed to look...
maybe you could do an example..?

Tricia - copy and paste is fine - though try not to paste whole pages - just the important parts and of course the url so you can find it again.
I'll try and do a few examples for you over the next day.
